Here’s a compilation of alcohol and cocktails that are gluten free! If you know of any other products or recipes, share them on this blog. It’s always interesting to learn about new products!

Your Gluten Free Alcohols:

  1. Distilled beverages like gin, vodka, whiskey, whiskey, scotch, or rye are made by fermenting wheat, barley, or rye. However, according to the Canadian Association of Celiac Disease these are alright to drink because during the fermentation process the alcohol evaporates and is separated from the gluten.
    • If you still have any doubts, Chopin vodka is distilled from potato flour.
  2. In the United States, the Celiac Sprue Association stipulates that wine, brandy (without preservatives or colouring), potato vodka, rum (made with cane sugar), and gluten free beers can be consumed without any concerns.
  3. Something good to note is that you should always pay attention to any signals from your body than an alcohol is not suitable to your intestines. Stop drinking a drink if you feel any signs because an ingredient could be disagreeing with your body, whether it’s gluten or not.
  4. Champagne is also gluten free.
  5. Ciders fermented from fruit are gluten free. Some have added barley so pay attention to the ingredient list. Moreover, a large majority of fruit ciders are starting to identify themselves as gluten free. Ex: Cidrerie McKeown
  6. Port and Sherry are also gluten free according to my sources.
  7. Gluten-free beer: Messagère, Glutenberg, Coup de grisou: Buckwheat beer can be tolerated by some people but it’s not certified gluten-free. For me, it’s never caused a problem. Most of these gluten free brewers are Quebecois, but there are several others that exist across the world. I’ll cover this more in a forthcoming blog post.
  8. Other beverages: Kaluha, Martini, Bourbon, Cognac (made with grapes), Vermouth (distilled with grapes), Breezers are all gluten free, handmade Armagnac, Kir, Margarita, and Sake.

To Avoid:

  1. All malt alcoholic beverages, ever present in depanneurs and convenience stores
    1. Smirnoff Ice (except those sold in the SAQ)
    2. Boris Cool
  2. All regular beers.
  3. The worcestershire sauce to garnish Bloody Caesars has gluten, so just avoid adding it. Also, Clamato “all dressed” contains gluten, so go for the original.
